Two high-speed trains travelling on the Madrid-Andalusia line collided just after 09:00 on 28 October 2026, when a Renfe AVE train struck an Iryo train from behind between Mora and Orgaz near Urda in Toledo province.

The AVE train was carrying 397 passengers and the Iryo train had 146 people on board. At least 10 people died in the crash.

Two Iryo wagons derailed and tumbled down an embankment. Images from the scene showed at least two severely damaged train carriages flipped on their sides.

The Spanish railway authority ADIF reported the collision shortly after 09:00. The high-speed train was travelling from Madrid to Seville.

Emergency services sent several fire crews, three helicopters and two mobile intensive care units to the site.

Manuel Galan, the mayor of Urda, said emergency services had asked him to prepare a sports hall for injured people.

Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the government of Castilla-La Mancha, said: 'There are at least 10 dead and it is possible that the number will increase.'

High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended after the collision.

Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish prime minister, said he was 'shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo' and offered his 'affection, solidarity and support to all the victims and their families.'

Monica Garcia, the Spanish health minister, called it a 'high impact accident, it will be a major tragedy.'

The opposition People's Party cancelled all campaign events.

The crash came nine months after another collision involving high-speed trains on the same line. In January, near Adamuz in Cordoba province, 46 people were killed after a train derailed and smashed into an oncoming train.
