How We Use AI

Last updated: 15.07.2026

The Modern is an AI-assisted newspaper. That is not a footnote for us — it is the core of how we work, so we want you to understand exactly what that means.

What AI does

  • Monitoring: our systems track thousands of public sources — wires, official releases, filings, local outlets — around the clock.
  • Drafting: AI produces first drafts of news reports, summaries and translations, and suggests headlines and related coverage.
  • Organizing: AI classifies stories by topic, interest and region so coverage reaches the readers it is relevant to.
  • Personalizing: if you opt in, AI tunes your For You feed around the topics you follow and the articles you save.

What humans do

  • Editorial direction: people decide what we cover, how prominently, and what our standards are.
  • Verification: claims in our reporting are checked against sources under our Editorial Standards.
  • Accountability: a named editorial team takes responsibility for what we publish, and our corrections policy applies to every article, however it was produced.

What AI does not do

  • AI does not decide our editorial line, endorse candidates or write opinion as if it were a person.
  • AI does not fabricate quotes, sources or events. If we cannot verify something, we do not publish it.
  • AI does not use your personal data to write stories. Personalization only changes what is shown to you, never what is true.

Labeling

Articles produced with AI assistance are labeled as such. When a story is substantially written by a person, it carries their byline; when it is produced by our pipeline, it says so.

Mistakes

AI systems make errors, and so do people. When we get something wrong we correct it quickly and log it publicly on our Corrections page. If you spot an error, please tell us — there is a link on every article and on our Contact page.
