Photon Matrix Lab says it has built a device that searches the air for mosquitoes, identifies them and automatically destroys them with a laser. The Chinese startup is headquartered in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province.
The system uses LiDAR, a sensing technology found in self-driving cars and robots. LiDAR sends laser pulses and examines the light returned by objects to work out where they are and how far away they are.
The company says its device is designed to avoid people, pets and reflective surfaces.
Photon Matrix Lab won orders through overseas crowdfunding campaigns and is moving towards commercial production. It has set initial monthly output at 3,000 to 5,000 units.
Lawrence Leung, the company’s sales director, said the first batch of orders is scheduled to ship this month. Photon Matrix Lab plans to expand production capacity next year.
Safety, reliable safeguards against misfires, accurate mosquito detection and a competitive price will be critical if a laser-based product is to win broad consumer acceptance and become commercially viable.
The potential demand sits alongside a sharp rise in dengue cases. The World Health Organization said reported cases worldwide more than doubled from 6.5 million in 2023 to a record 14.6 million in 2024.
