Nicki Minaj walked alongside President Donald Trump as they stepped off Air Force One at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan on Sunday. The rapper, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago, moved to the US as a child and is a permanent resident, had joined the president for the trip to a rally in Port Huron.
During the flight, Minaj took part in a mock press secretary-style interview with Steven Cheung, the White House director of communications. She called Trump a “great guy” and praised his business background and understanding of economics.
Cheung later posted video of Minaj arriving at the air base and wrote: “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!”
The press secretary job was open after Katie Zacharia left five days after a shaky public debut. Minaj reposted the video with an American flag and a grinning face with a sweat drop emoji.
Alex Bruesewitz, an adviser to the president, replied to Cheung’s mock press secretary video: “Hey Barbz, what do we think about this idea??”
At the Port Huron rally, held with the midterm elections just over a week away, Minaj appeared in a gold-coloured Gucci-branded suit to urge support for Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers and gubernatorial candidate John James.
Trump called Minaj to the stage and said: “By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful ass before: Nicki Minaj! That's hard to miss!”
He asked her to “stand up” and said he hoped she was not “insulted” by the remark. Trump added: “We love Nicki. She's been with us for a long time”.
Trump also said, “I've never done that with a man before. It's true. Off the record, women: Yes. Men, no, OK?” He described Minaj as someone who “never looked more beautiful” and said: “She gets it. She's smart.”
Minaj was among the rally’s final speakers. Standing at a podium while Trump watched, she led the crowd in chants of “When I say Mike, you say Rogers” and “When I say John, you say James”.
She then told Trump: “it is an honor to stand with you every single time, and I will continue to support you forever and ever. If you run again, I will support you again.”
