For Heidi Klum’s annual Halloween party, the costume reveal has become the central attraction, with each year bringing a more elaborate transformation.
Klum said the idea began when she studied her left hand and thought, “Hey, I think that I can fit my body inside of this somehow.” Special effects makeup designer Mike Marino created the resulting costume with about 10 to 20 people assembling it, and called it one of the most elaborate costumes ever made.
At the party’s 25th anniversary on Saturday night, Klum arrived as a severed left hand. The event was held at Cathédrale Restaurant at Moxy East Village in New York.
The scale of the costume meant Klum travelled to the venue in the cargo area of a small truck. She arrived in a truck marked with red danger signs, while actors in yellow hazmat suits helped her down to the ground.
Her head sat at the centre of the hand, with her legs tucked into its middle and ring fingers. Only her eyes and mouth could be seen. The hand had long red-painted nails, along with Klum’s engagement and wedding rings and a tattoo bearing the name of her husband, Tom Kaulitz.
Dangling ligaments, tendons and bones hung from the severed wrist. Fake blood ran from Klum’s mouth, and she spat more of it on the red carpet before sticking out a blood-red tongue at the press.
Earlier this year, Klum had promised a costume that would be “very, very bloody” and would go well with red wine. She said she had never seen a person walking around dressed as a hand, describing the idea as “something new and different.”
Kaulitz did not attend because he had a concert in Germany. His presence was nevertheless written into the costume itself, in the tattoo and rings on its fingers.
Klum’s earlier costumes have included Medusa, E.T., a peacock, Fiona from Shrek, Jessica Rabbit, a worm and the werewolf from Michael Jackson’s Thriller. At last year’s party, she appeared as Medusa, with a headpiece of writhing snakes and a trailing tail, created by a team of 15 artists.
Her creations are designed for a single night. “This is only good for the night. Tonight. Everything goes down the drain, so to speak, in the shower,” Klum said of the elaborate costumes.
Guests joined the Halloween spectacle. Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka came as the twins from the horror film The Shining. Kyle MacLachlan wore an evil Cliff Vandercave costume from the 1994 film The Flintstones and attended with his wife, Desiree Gruber, and their son, Callum Lyon MacLachlan. Klum’s daughter, Leni, arrived as Miss Piggy.
