Meta poaches MongoDB's chief executive to run its new enterprise AI division, sending MongoDB shares down 25%

Chirantan 'CJ' Desai left MongoDB after less than a year to become Meta's chief enterprise platform officer, reporting directly to Mark Zuckerberg. MongoDB has brought back its former long-serving chief executive as interim replacement.

Meta Platforms’ recruitment of Chirantan ‘CJ’ Desai is best read as an effort to give its business-focused artificial intelligence products a single executive centre, while leaving MongoDB to manage an immediate return by its former long-serving leader. Desai stepped down as MongoDB’s president and chief executive effective immediately on Monday to become Meta’s chief enterprise platform officer, reporting directly to Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

The announcement was followed by a 25% fall in MongoDB stock and a decline of about 4% in Meta shares. The moves reflected uncertainty around MongoDB’s abrupt leadership change and Meta’s ability to carry out its enterprise artificial intelligence plans. It remains unknown whether Desai’s departure had been planned or how long MongoDB’s interim arrangement will last.

Desai will lead Meta’s newly formed Enterprise Platform division. Its initial priorities are a suite of artificial intelligence tools that includes Muse agent, a business agent and a coding tool. The full scope and budget of the division have not been disclosed.

The new unit brings together Meta’s enterprise artificial intelligence efforts as the company expands tools aimed at business customers. In June, Meta launched its Meta Business Agent globally, making artificial intelligence-powered tools available to businesses on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Desai’s direct reporting line to Zuckerberg gives the Enterprise Platform division a prominent place in Meta’s management structure.

Desai joined Meta after a period of less than a year as MongoDB’s chief executive. He took over from Dev Ittycheria in November 2025. Before leading MongoDB, Desai was president of product and engineering at Cloudflare, bringing experience in cloud and data infrastructure to Meta’s enterprise platform plans.

MongoDB’s board has named Ittycheria interim president and chief executive, also effective immediately. Ittycheria previously led the company for 11 years, from 2014 to 2025. During that period, MongoDB grew from roughly $35 million to more than $2.3 billion in annual revenue.

The leadership switch comes after a strong recent financial update from MongoDB. In early September, the company reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $771.8 million, up 30% year over year. It also raised its full-year revenue guidance to a range of $2.99 billion to $3.03 billion.

That performance means the transition is taking place as MongoDB expects annual revenue to exceed $3 billion, rather than during a reported downturn. The company has not said how long Ittycheria will remain interim chief executive. It is also unknown whether other senior MongoDB executives may leave following Desai’s departure.

For Meta, the appointment places an executive with experience in product, engineering, cloud and data infrastructure in charge of a division intended to develop artificial intelligence tools for businesses. The company has identified the products it will initially prioritise, though it has not set out why it created the division at this point or provided further details of its planned operations.
