A sword attack at a high school in central Sweden killed one person and wounded three others on Friday afternoon, among the most serious incidents of school violence the country has seen in recent years. For some of the students caught up in it, the day had been their first at the school after the summer recess.
The attack took place at Brinell High School in Fagersta, a town of around 13,000 people, at approximately 14:06 local time (12:06 GMT) on August 21, 2026, according to Reuters.
Local police chief Tommy Alriksson confirmed at a press conference that one person had been killed and three others injured. Two of the wounded were seriously hurt; a third sustained lighter injuries. Arab News reported that the two seriously wounded victims were teenage boys aged between 12 and 17. Both were in stable condition, one having undergone emergency surgery.
Officers shot the suspect during the response and arrested him at the scene. The Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet reported he was shot in the leg, according to Euronews. Alriksson confirmed the suspect was an 18-year-old man.
Authorities described the weapon as a sword, though Aftonbladet used the term machete. The precise nature of the weapon has not been officially confirmed.
Swedish public broadcaster SVT, citing unnamed sources, reported that the attacker was a former student at the school, arrived wearing a helmet, and had a prior conviction for assault. Those details have not been independently confirmed. Channel News Asia cited the SVT reporting.
The school had just reopened after the summer recess. For some students, Friday was their first day at the senior school, Reuters reported.
Several other schools and public buildings in Fagersta were placed under lockdown in the aftermath. Students were held for more than three hours before being released, according to Arab News. PBS NewsHour also reported the lockdowns.
Police said they had no reason to believe there were multiple perpetrators and were working to establish a motive.
The attack invites comparison with the October 2015 assault at a school in Trollhättan, western Sweden, in which a sword-wielding 21-year-old killed three people in what authorities described as a racially motivated attack, according to Channel News Asia. The parallels are limited: the motive in Friday's attack remains unknown, and police have made no suggestion of a similar pattern. What the two incidents share is the setting, the weapon, and the abruptness of the violence visited on students at the start of a school day.
Sweden has faced a series of high-profile episodes of school violence in recent years. Friday's attack will intensify pressure on authorities to account for how such incidents occur, and to explain what, if anything, was known about the suspect before he arrived at the school gates.
