Wakefield Trinity have reached their first Super League semi-final after beating Leigh Leopards 26-16 in a play-off eliminator, a result that carries the club beyond a barrier it had met on four earlier occasions.
Trinity had previously appeared in the Super League play-offs four times without reaching the last four. Under head coach Daryl Powell, they now move on to face either Leeds Rhinos or Wigan Warriors in the semi-final.
Tyson Smoothy, Tom Johnstone, Isaiah Vagana and Caius Faatili scored Wakefield's four tries. Max Jowitt added 5 goals and brought up his 500th Super League point with a penalty goal.
Leigh stayed in the contest through tries from David Armstrong, Lachlan Lam and Innes Senior.
The match also included the dismissal of Emre Guler for a punch. Guler had been due to join Wakefield in 2027, but arrived in England last week to join the club's play-off push.
For Wakefield, the result reversed the outcome of their last meeting with Leigh last season, when the Leopards stopped Trinity. Leigh had returned to the top flight following promotion, and their previous victory had added another thread to a tie that ended with Wakefield making club history.
Powell's side now have a place in the Super League's last four and await the outcome involving Leeds or Wigan to learn their semi-final opponents.
