Pentagon gives 3 million staff access to ChatGPT and Grok through secure AI portal

ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government went live on 31 August through GenAI.mil, the Defence Department's centralised platform for handling sensitive unclassified work. The portal already has 1.7 million users and launched last year with Google Gemini.

The Pentagon’s addition of ChatGPT and Grok to its GenAI.mil platform is best read as an effort to widen access to commercial frontier artificial intelligence while keeping government work outside ordinary consumer services. The Department of Defense (DOD) launched customised versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, called ChatGPT Mil, and xAI’s Grok, called Grok for Government, on 31 August 2026.

The tools are integrated into GenAI.mil, a centralised secure portal for 3 million civilian and military Pentagon personnel. The platform is designed to give DOD employees access to commercial frontier AI models without sending sensitive government data through ordinary consumer channels. The official military version is exempt from the data collection that is difficult to avoid in consumer technology products.

Both ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government have received Impact Level 5 (IL5) authorisation. IL5 is the highest authorisation for environments that store and process non-public, sensitive unclassified data.

GenAI.mil was launched last year, initially offering Google Gemini. Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government products were the first to go live on the platform. In December 2025, the DOD set out plans for a swift and expansive release of GenAI.mil to more than 3 million military members, civilian employees and contractors.

The portal has since onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users out of the department’s 3 million personnel. The addition of multiple models gives staff access to tools tailored to different types of work through the same controlled distribution channel.

ChatGPT Mil was built through the OpenAI for Government initiative. The DOD said it will support document-heavy unclassified work in planning, policy, logistics and administration. Employees can use it to generate reliable models for repeatable workflows, including filling out travel forms and responding to contracting opportunities.

Grok for Government is tailored for federal use. Its capabilities include deep-thinking inference, adaptive reasoning modes called Auto, Fast and Expert, customisable workspaces, persistent projects and reusable playbooks. Under DOD directives, it will support acquisition market research, supply chain optimisation and precision planning across diverse tactical environments.

GenAI.mil currently offers GPT-5.4 Terra. GPT-5.6 Terra, OpenAI’s latest frontier model, is due to be added soon.
