Donald Trump has said he is forming an “AI force” and will soon name an “AI czar” to lead it, setting out an approach to artificial intelligence that puts industry growth and competition with China ahead of new oversight measures.
In a social media post on Saturday, Trump described artificial intelligence as “the next industrial revolution” and predicted it would account for 25% of the US GDP. He said the US was ahead of China and other countries in the field, writing: “We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way!”
The proposed force has no announced structure, budget or timetable. Trump also gave no details of the person he plans to appoint as AI czar, or of the authority that role would hold.
Trump compared the proposed body with the Space Force, created during his first term. “For this purpose, I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force, which has been a tremendous SUCCESS, in my first term,” he said.
The announcement sets Trump against many experts and figures within the AI industry who have recently warned about the risks of artificial intelligence growing unchecked. Trump rejected those warnings as “hoaxes” pushed by Democrats.
He grouped criticism of unchecked AI growth with other claims he described as hoaxes, including efforts to impeach him, transgender rights and global warming. He gave no specific response to the concerns raised by industry figures and experts.
Trump said his administration would avoid measures that could restrain the sector. He vowed to “not in any way hinder or stifle the growth of this incredible Industry”.
Instead, he said he would rely on existing legal systems in cases where intervention was required. “I will be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing criminal and civil justice system,” Trump wrote. He did not explain how criminal or civil justice systems would be applied to AI oversight.
Trump presented the AI force as a means of supporting an industry he sees as central to US economic strength and international competition. “Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!” he said.
The post leaves open what regulations, if any, Trump intends to avoid, and how the new force would operate alongside existing government structures. Its immediate political message was clearer: Trump is casting the expansion of artificial intelligence as an economic and strategic priority, while treating calls for stronger safeguards as partisan opposition.
