Hedge funds now hold more US Treasuries than China, Japan and Saudi Arabia combined
Funds have amassed roughly $4.0 trillion in gross Treasury exposure, financed by $3.0 trillion in repo borrowing. The basis trade at the heart of it runs at up to 70 times leverage, capturing spreads of just a few basis points.
