President Donald Trump was secretly spirited off Air Force One at Ankara's Esenboğa Airport on 8 July 2026 and flown to Britain aboard a smaller military aircraft, after U.S. officials detected what they assessed to be a credible Iranian threat to shoot down his plane. The elaborate deception, first reported by The Washington Post and subsequently confirmed by multiple outlets, kept reporters travelling with the president — and some White House staff — entirely in the dark.
The operation unfolded during the 2026 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) summit in Ankara, one day after the United States resumed military strikes on Iran following the collapse of peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Trump had publicly acknowledged Iran regarded him as its primary target.
Before cameras and journalists at the airport, Trump boarded the older version of Air Force One, announcing he would fly it, according to Salon, "for old time's sake" — a gesture he framed on Truth Social as an opportunity for military personnel to see the newer Qatari-gifted aircraft he had arrived on. Trump had flown into Turkey aboard a Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar, which he had used for the inbound leg of the trip.
Once aboard Air Force One and out of public sight, Trump was moved to a catering truck that had been raised to the level of the aircraft on the opposite side from where journalists had boarded. He was then transferred to an Air Force C-32A — a modified Boeing 757 typically used by the vice president — and flown separately to Britain, The New York Times reported.
Officials told CBS News that the threat involved a potential Iranian missile strike on the aircraft. Reuters reported the C-32A carrying Trump arrived in Britain at around 10:20 p.m., with the older Air Force One and the media contingent landing minutes later.
The reporters and some White House staff aboard Air Force One were not told Trump had left the plane, according to the BBC. Their flight, and its public profile as the presidential aircraft, effectively served as a decoy — though those on board had no knowledge of that role.
The deception continued on arrival in Britain. Trump was covertly moved back onto the older Air Force One and then disembarked in view of reporters, according to Al Jazeera. He subsequently boarded the Qatari-gifted Boeing 747-8 to fly back to Washington.
The White House has not officially confirmed the secret transfer. White House Communications Director Steve Cheung, responding to questions, defended the Qatari-gifted jet and said the U.S. uses "every tool" to counter foreign threats, Al Jazeera reported.
Several details remain unknown, including the precise sourcing and nature of the Iranian threat, whether any Iranian operatives were identified in connection with it, and exactly how Trump was transferred back onto the older Air Force One once in Britain.
Presidential travel deception in response to security threats is not without precedent. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the administration of President George W. Bush similarly concealed his whereabouts for national security reasons. The scale of the July operation — involving three separate aircraft, a staged public boarding and an unwitting press corps — represents one of the more elaborate protective manoeuvres reported around a sitting U.S. president in recent years.
