Ethiopian forces retake Mekelle as Tigray war drags in its neighbours
Federal troops have entered the Tigray capital after nearly two weeks of fighting, collapsing the 2022 Pretoria ceasefire that ended a war in which around 600,000 people died. Ethiopia has now severed diplomatic ties with Eritrea and expelled an Egyptian diplomat, accusing both countries — along with Sudan — of backing the rebels. All three deny it.
