Reddit to join the S&P 500 on 18 August, sending its shares up 11%

The social media company becomes only the second pure social media firm in the benchmark, after Meta. Its stock is still down 31% this year, weighed down by fears that AI is eating into its Google search traffic.

The bond between an index and its constituents is mechanical: when a stock enters the S&P 500, every passive fund tracking the benchmark must buy it. Reddit's inclusion, announced on 13 August 2026, sets that process in motion — even as the stock sits roughly 31% below where it began the year.

S&P Dow Jones Indices confirmed that Reddit, trading under the ticker RDDT, will be added to the S&P 500 before trading opens on 18 August 2026. The change is off-cycle, meaning it falls outside the index's scheduled quarterly rebalancing. It was triggered by the pending acquisition of AvalonBay Communities — the company Reddit replaces — by fellow S&P 500 member Equity Residential.

Reddit shares jumped approximately 11% in after-hours trading following the announcement, rising to $175.38 from a regular-session close of $153.12. The move is consistent with the well-documented index-inclusion effect: passive funds tracking the S&P 500 are required to hold its constituents, generating mechanical buying demand that typically pushes a newly added stock higher ahead of the effective date.

The milestone carries symbolic weight. Reddit becomes only the second pureplay social media company in the S&P 500, after Meta. The distinction matters because it separates companies whose core business is social media from diversified technology or advertising groups that operate social platforms among other products.

The inclusion arrives roughly two and a half years after Reddit's initial public offering. The company raised $748 million in March 2024, pricing shares at $34 — the top of its marketed range. Shares closed at $50.44 on the first day of trading, a 48% gain above the IPO price. The after-hours price of $175.38 on 13 August 2026 represents a substantial premium to that original offering price, even accounting for the stock's difficult 2026.

That difficulty is the complication the index pop does not resolve. As of the 13 August market close, Reddit's stock was down approximately 31% year-to-date. Concerns around the impact of artificial intelligence-driven changes to Google search traffic on Reddit's audience and advertising business have weighed on the stock throughout the year. The index inclusion creates a floor of demand from passive buyers; it does not alter the underlying trading economics.

S&P Dow Jones Indices also announced that Sun Communities will join the S&P MidCap 400 before trading begins on 20 August 2026.

Reddit's exact weighting within the S&P 500 at the time of inclusion, and the total volume of index-fund purchases expected as a result, had not been disclosed as of the announcement.
