Flash floods struck the China-Nepal border region on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, killing at least 22 people in Nepal and leaving hundreds of tourists, workers and others unaccounted for, as rescue teams searched affected communities.

The disaster hit both sides of the border. The Diplomat reported that the China-Nepal border region was devastated, with China's government confirming major casualties in the Gyirong border area and launching search and rescue operations. France 24 reported that the waters swept through communities in Nepal, where at least 22 people were confirmed dead and hundreds more, including tourists and workers, went missing.

The floods brought travel across parts of Nepal to a halt, compounding the difficulties facing rescue teams working through debris-strewn and damaged terrain.

India moved quickly to respond. The central government put the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on high alert and deployed teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), according to the Times of India. Emergency helplines were also established for Indian nationals stranded in the affected areas.

The precise number of dead across Nepal and China combined, the full count of missing persons across both countries, and the current status of rescue operations all remain unclear. The specific villages affected and the extent of infrastructure damage have not been confirmed.
