The Gaza Ministry of Health has reported a rising death toll since the conflict began on 7 October 2023. The highest total in the material provided is 71,271 martyrs by the end of 2025. The ministry is a party to the war, and its tally has not been independently verified.
The ministry has said that several groups are outside its recorded total. On 7 January 2024, it listed missing people, people whose bodies remained under rubble, unidentified dead, people buried by families without being recorded at a hospital, and victims in Gaza and North Gaza after November 2023, when its information system stopped. The size of those uncounted categories is unknown.
The reported number of people wounded in the Gaza Strip since the war began is 104,638.
The ministry had previously reported at least 44,235 people killed after more than 13 months of war between Israel and Palestinian militants. Its named casualty records listed 34,344 people whose deaths were recorded to 31 August 2024, over 649 pages.
Those lists form an important part of the ministry’s public record. Since 21 October 2023, however, the ministry has not posted a file on its own web host. Its casualty lists have been issued through its media office channel on Telegram.
The records identify two paths by which entries reached the list. As of 30 June 2024, 22,368 rows were marked as ministry records and 5,817 as notifications from martyrs’ relatives. The ministry said 28,185 records contained complete data, while 9,715 remained incomplete. The supplied material does not explain how notifications from relatives are checked.
The named list expanded 61% over five months, from 21,323 records for deaths to 29 March 2024 to 34,344 for deaths to 31 August 2024. Separately, the daily statistical report for 30 June 2024 gave a total of 37,877 martyrs and 86,969 injuries. That report did not include fields for sex or age.
The ministry’s records also show limits in geographical and chronological coverage. In the March list, entries held as ministry records for Gaza governorate extended only to 10 November 2023. Records for southern governorates extended to 29 March 2024, apart from Nasser, where they ended on 14 February 2024. It is unknown when the ministry’s information system returned to full coverage.
The published figures cannot establish how many of the dead were civilians or combatants. The Gaza Health Ministry does not separate those groups in its overall toll. None of its four lists includes a field for combatant status, and none of the four documents provides a combatant or non-combatant total.
In its Health Annual Report, Palestine 2025, the ministry said children represented 30% of the reported dead, women 16%, elderly people 7% and men 47%. These classifications concern age and sex. They do not indicate whether an individual participated in the fighting.
Israeli media reported that an Israeli security official had acknowledged more than 70,000 people killed in the Gaza war, including more than 20,000 combatants. Israel has separately said it killed more than 12,000 Hamas fighters. The material provided does not show how those Israeli figures correspond to the ministry’s named records or to deaths the ministry excludes.
The available accounts point to a large death toll while leaving major limits on the data. There is no independent verification, the ministry has identified system gaps dating from November 2023, and the civilian and combatant breakdown remains unknown.
