Tehran has staged a huge pro-regime march in defiance of President Trump’s threat of “annihilation”, as the war between Iran and the US entered its seventh month with no stated resolution.
The demonstration offered a public show of support for Iran’s ruling system at a point when the Trump administration is considering further military action. The nature and scope of any potential US move have not been specified.
Trump is weighing additional action in an effort to break the deadlock in the conflict. The prospect of escalation comes after seven months of war between the two countries.
The Tehran march was explicitly framed as a response to Trump’s “annihilation” threat. The number of participants has not been provided.
The conflict has also carried domestic economic costs in the US. Trump addressed the high price of gas by calling it “a very inexpensive price to pay” for the Iran war.
No figure has been given for the rise in gas prices connected to the conflict. Trump’s remarks nevertheless placed the cost to American consumers within his wider argument for continuing the war effort.
Iran’s rally and the US deliberations point to a conflict still defined by pressure on both sides. Tehran has used public mobilisation to answer the US threat, while Trump is considering whether further military action can shift a war that has remained deadlocked for seven months.
