De Kooning sets European record but can't save a flat Sotheby's London sale
His 1977 Untitled sold for £9.8m, two and a half times what it fetched in 2015. The wider sale brought £36.9m at hammer, below its £41.7m low estimate, with six lots unsold and only 30% of works beating their presale targets.
